Quercus Review
is an annual literary arts journal that
features some of the best new poetry, fiction, and black & white artwork in
the country. Please read the guidelines below for the genre in which
you intend to submit, as individual guidelines do vary. Please
also submit separately for each genre.
Response time: 3 weeks to 6 months. Publication pays one free copy. Additional contributor copies can be
purchased for 35% off cover price. All rights revert to authors and
artists upon publication.
Journal format is digest-sized, perfect-bound, featuring full-color cover
and 150+ professionally printed pages.
About 65% of our content is poetry, 30% is
fiction, 5% is art, and each
issue includes one featured writer and an interview with him or her.
We accept less than 5% of work received and rarely comment on work
unless it's really close to being accepted.
Also, consider ordering a
sample copy of QR here
to familiarize yourself with our particular tastes.

We
will not read manuscripts that do not include an SASE (self-addressed, stamped
envelope.) Please submit separately for each genre. Also, please
include an email address and/or phone number in your cover letter.
Poetry
(Submission Period:
We have
a rolling submissions policy, so submissions are accepted year-round, but
the cutoff for inclusion in our annual issue (May/June) is February 1.)
Send 3-5 previously unpublished poems with cover letter and SASE. We do
not accept simultaneous or electronic submissions. Please
include a brief bio in your cover letter. We prefer poems that do not exceed 40 lines, though we will consider longer
work. We appreciate
strong imagery and writing that resonates a unique voice and has a clear and
insightful perspective on a fresh subject. We like poetry
that has a pulse and doesn't lay lifeless on the page.
We are
not
interested in poorly rhymed, overly sentimental, obscure, predictable,
singsong, preachy, or cliché writing.
Poetry that has a sense of style, craft, edginess, humor, and/or
flair stands a better chance for publication than writing that relies on the
word “soul” too heavily. Make us sigh or chuckle, but please communicate
something beyond the obvious.
Fiction
(submission Period: August 1 thru January 1st only)
Send previously unpublished stories with cover letter and SASE. Simultaneous submissions okay with notification upon acceptance elsewhere. Please
include a brief bio in your cover letter. We consider fiction up to 7000 words. All work must be double-spaced, paginated, with your name included on each
page, and must be received within the submission reading period or it will
be returned unread. We
are not interested in genre fiction.
Art
Send camera-ready, black & white artwork (photocopies or originals) and
SASE. Please include a brief bio in your cover letter. We do accept
electronic submissions on 3.5” diskette, CD, or, preferably, via email attachments
saved as high-resolution .jpeg or .tiff files, which can be sent
here for consideration. We accept color images as
well, but all art will be reproduced in black & white.
